The Hellblazers can feel they’re close. Having followed Ocasta into the bowels of Undermountain, hoping to thwart her plans to deliver the Hand of Vecna to the very heart of Malhavok‘s subterranean lair, they find themselves separated by a warded double door.
Abraxas casts Unmagic Missile, dispelling the Glyph of Warding, while Akkamas, with Jone trailing, investigates the western door. Discovering three Orc sentries, Jone fired a pair of Eldritch Blasts that struck harmlessly against the back wall.
The Orcs sprung into action as the Hellblazers gathered to do battle, their confrontation with Ocasta delayed.
As more Orcs arrived, including an Orcish Shaman, the party were hard pressed, but working in concert, dealt with Ocasta‘s minions and put them down — however, the sound of battle drew forth one of the Mother of Inventions‘ enforcers — Lord Valkin Stross, a Death Knight sworn to Ocasta‘s service.
The Death Knight was ruthless, felling the adventures with a combination of Hellfire Orb, Destructive Wave, and the flame of his magical longsword. Stross cut a wake through the party, living them battered and unconscious, but never to the point of complete victory. The Hellblazers were tenacious, utilizing magical healing, through spells and potions, to stay in the fight.
While Jone and Kelwyn harried Stross with cantrips, Braxton, Wilbough, and Tim met the Death Knight in melee combat. Abraxas summoned a greater demon to have at their foe and Akkamas unleashed a flurry of frigid assaults to further weaken the Fell Lord.
Finally, Tim delivered the final blow, a critical strike from Whisper, that put the Death Knight down for good.
Near spent, Abraxas sent his demonic charge into the room where Ocasta, Jarlaxle, Lord Daedron Farkus, and the Orc Generals Gr’uud and Karz’uh were gathered as the Mother communed with an eldritch horror… As the rest of the party gathered the bodies of the shaman and Death Knight, Abraxas then chanted ‘Dilly Dilly“, whisking them away to his extradimensional lair.
In desperate need to lick their wounds, the Hellblazers were saddened at the loss of Qoal, Jone‘s porter, who died at the hands of the Fell Lord. In the midst of the battle, both Akkamas and Abraxas lost their familiars, as well.
Kelwyn said, “If only the porter could be resummoned as easily as Littlecrow and Gunter/Broos.”
And thus another chapter in the Hellblazers’ adventures came to a close… Taking a long rest in Abraxas’ Secured Space, what will they find once they return to Undermountain? They’ll find out next Thursday.
